Shosholoza (1)

I had forgotten this pic I took during Admirals a few years ago. This was taken from a small R.I.B. in about 35 knots of wind, just outside Vulcan Rock. This is of course the original Shosholoza . . . swell was running at about 4m that day. On the helm is Dick de Kroon, and Pat West (in the red) is working the lee side winch.

Our thoughts are with Jendo, Hilda and Sasha Ocenasek

Those who may not know, Sasha was involved in a serious horse riding accident last week. She was knocked unconcious after falling from her horse near the Disa river, and has been in a serious condition since - but thankfully recovering slowly in hospital we understand. Our thoughts and best wishes go to to Jendo, Hilda and Sasha, and we wish her a speedy recovery.

Our fantastic new club!

Mostly thanks to our Friday Night Crew (we all know who they are!), and the generous donations of members - the club has undergone a tremendous workover inside. It really is a pleasant environment to be in these days. Just shows what is possible with a bit of leadership and initiative!

HBYC Club Champs won by Megafreight!

Megafreight continues its winning streak by winning the Jan 2010 Club Champs. Some may remember they also recently won the PHRF Class 1 division in the FBYC Intasure Spring Regatta. Well done to them! Are we going to let them win anything else?

After postponing the event in early November (blown out) - it was held in 23/24 Jan 2010 in perfect weather although conditions a bit light for sailing. However five races were completed allowing a discard for each entrant. It was fantastic to see ten local boats on the water, and a generally high standard of racing. There was great support from the sailors in respect of prizes donated, and willingness to help. Along with the Friday night draw, this was one of the busiest and most memorable weekends at the club in a long time. Bar takings were the highest in a long time!

South Africa's Premier Club Sailing Trophy!

Chris Sutton receives the beautiful large scale model of an historic Danish Sailing Ship from Dick de Kroon, on behalf of HBYC and the Wed night sailors. This ship will grace the club and be used as the (non removable) floating trophy for the annual HBYC Club Championship Sailing Regatta.

Valued at about R20k, this is probably the most impressive sailing trophy in the country!

Wednesday night sailing starts again tonight!

Although not ascheduled race - there will be a race this evening for those who can make it. Normal start time of 18:00.

Reminder that club champs are scheduled for 23/24 Jan - further details imminent!

HBYC wishes all members and readers a very good Christmas, and safe time over this festive season. We think also of our cruising members in remote places - Rod and Mary in Tobago, Jeremy and Yvonne (Argentina? - where are they going next?!), Thomas and Johness (also across the pond but I cant think where).

Acknowledgements to www.1stweather.com - an excellent weather site in South Africa. This article explains the mechanics of the Cape South Easter, of particular interest to yachtsmen, especially in Hout Bay! An especially interesting part is the relationship between the inversion layer and the surface windspeed – due to the funnelling effect this causes – where windspeeds can dramatically exceed forecast levels.
