HBYC Christmas in July!

Santa Parker and his Fairies!

Feast in Progress

Glamour Page!

Jurgen was practising his "event photography" here.

Boys will be boys, except these it seems....

This was a great event and very well managed! The food was astonishing  by any standards, never mind the very reasonable ticket price! Lots of folk were involved - a real club effort, lead by the usual suspects, as usual! Attendance was limited to sixty people as I recall, and every seat was taken. Nice to see we still know how to have a good party!

HBYC Lipton Campaign (HBYC wins first race!)

Heck - what a surprise this morning when I saw HBYC won the first race of Lipton, and are currently lying 1st!!!! Although this is only the first race in a long regatta and anything can happen, this is a small miracle and a story that needs some telling when time allows!

At time of writing, the official provisional results page shows HBYC in #1, ahead even of RCYC, POYC and FBYC. I am blown away! This from our dedicated and talented Theo Yon and crew. This is the culmination of a long series of events one could just about make a movie about - success against all odds, and a fantastic team effort from so many people. I hope we find a journalist to take this one onboard.

Well done to all! Keep it going guys!

R.I.P. Mike Lundy!

Mike Lundy, far right of the pic, at 2014 "HBYC Orphan's Lunch"
Rest in Peace Mike.

Mike was a damn fine bloke - that I gathered very quickly from the various times I chatted with him at the yacht club. A gentleman, a great conversationalist, a well known hiker and author of some twenty books on hiking etc, member of the various Cape town hiking clubs etc. He ran a very successful business disposing of insurance assets etc, and was a popular and well known resident of Hout Bay, and in fact of Cape Town.

I suspect he had a lot of other credentials but sadly I was not well enough acquainted with him to say much more - hopefully other club members will supply further info for the website. Certainly he will be remembered as a true gentleman and a thoroughly decent guy, what else can one ask for?

Sincerest condolences to his family.

He is sadly missed at H.B.Y.C.

Light and pleasant conditions on the Sunday

L26s battled it out race after race...

RCYC Yacht Corum sailed an absolutely superb regatta to win the Admiral's Dagger. Brilliantly skippered by Paul Vivian, they crossed the line first in every race, whilst also achieving a good number of handicap wins to win the regatta overall, including the John Coles Sprint event!

Royal Cape Yacht Club was awarded the sword as the leading team.

Despite a relatively small fleet of thirteen entries, sailing conditions were very good with a mix of sailing conditions. Courses were set off Noordhoek beach with steady winds that varied from light to quite fresh. The final race on the Monday was undoubtedly the most memorable in a fresh South Easter off Noordhoek Beach with windspeeds building to over 35 knots at times. Race officer Tom Ambrose set a generous olympic course off the beach which made for some truly spectacular sailing and scenery. The two leading L26s - skippered by Greg Davis and Theo Yon - astonished the fleet by arriving 2nd and 3rd at the first leeward rounding, not too far behind Corum, and ahead of the two Simonis 35s! Another L26 - Macatini - astonished the fleet too with a spectacular broach just after setting their bag at the weather mark. For a short while the keel was in the air but they recovered promptly and sailed on!

A great feature of the regatta was the unofficial class racing between the four L26s, the two Miuras, and the two Simonis 35s. It was great to see HBYC's young Theo Yon sailing excellent races on L26 LTC Orion, often beating the L26 Coordination skippered by the mighty Greg Davis! If it were not for a DSQ due to a poorly executed penalty turn, Theo would have taken the Admirals Dagger and won the regatta!

Hout Bay Yacht Club laid on a lovely lamb spit roast and some music on the Saturday night, and a delicious lamb curry for the prizegiving on the Monday.

Many thanks to all those from Royal Cape Yacht Club who made the effort to support this event - comments were very positive all round and I am sure we can expect an even batter event in 2016.
