Theo and Team finish 3rd overall in Quingdao!

The original brief Press Release:

"Local Sailor goes to China
Hout Bay Yacht Club’s Youth Development Trainer, Theo Yon, has been selected to represent the Western Cape to sail in the Qingdao International Regatta from 12-16 August.

Over 60 applications were received but only one team of 5 were chosen so this is a great honour for Theo who has risen up from our junior ranks to now being our youth Sail Trainer and represents our Club at all major regattas.

Due to the generosity of the Club’s Members, Theo departs with R3500 pocket money for extra expenses, plus a new underwater video camera to captures events at the Regatta. On his return, Theo will give a talk at the Club and share his experiences with his colleagues and Members. The camera will then be used for sail training."

More than this, Hout Bay Yacht Club can be extremely proud of this as a pinnacle achievement of its Development Sailing Programme, which continues to thrive. So many members have played a part in this over the years it would be foolish to name any. The spirit and generosity of the members has been fantastic, and I might add Theo has been a well deserved champion in the midst of it. To my mind this is such a good news story at a time when we all need a bit of cheering up!

HBYC Christmas in July!

Santa Parker and his Fairies!

Feast in Progress

Glamour Page!

Jurgen was practising his "event photography" here.

Boys will be boys, except these it seems....

This was a great event and very well managed! The food was astonishing  by any standards, never mind the very reasonable ticket price! Lots of folk were involved - a real club effort, lead by the usual suspects, as usual! Attendance was limited to sixty people as I recall, and every seat was taken. Nice to see we still know how to have a good party!

HBYC Lipton Campaign (HBYC wins first race!)

Heck - what a surprise this morning when I saw HBYC won the first race of Lipton, and are currently lying 1st!!!! Although this is only the first race in a long regatta and anything can happen, this is a small miracle and a story that needs some telling when time allows!

At time of writing, the official provisional results page shows HBYC in #1, ahead even of RCYC, POYC and FBYC. I am blown away! This from our dedicated and talented Theo Yon and crew. This is the culmination of a long series of events one could just about make a movie about - success against all odds, and a fantastic team effort from so many people. I hope we find a journalist to take this one onboard.

Well done to all! Keep it going guys!

R.I.P. Mike Lundy!

Mike Lundy, far right of the pic, at 2014 "HBYC Orphan's Lunch"
Rest in Peace Mike.

Mike was a damn fine bloke - that I gathered very quickly from the various times I chatted with him at the yacht club. A gentleman, a great conversationalist, a well known hiker and author of some twenty books on hiking etc, member of the various Cape town hiking clubs etc. He ran a very successful business disposing of insurance assets etc, and was a popular and well known resident of Hout Bay, and in fact of Cape Town.

I suspect he had a lot of other credentials but sadly I was not well enough acquainted with him to say much more - hopefully other club members will supply further info for the website. Certainly he will be remembered as a true gentleman and a thoroughly decent guy, what else can one ask for?

Sincerest condolences to his family.

He is sadly missed at H.B.Y.C.
